For Your Eyes Only

Plot

For Your Eyes Only advance Film Poster - AllPosters.com

Revenge encircles Bond throughout this movie, first as he visits his wife’s grave, the victim of Blofeld's revenge, and later on as he aids Melina Havelock in her quest to avenge her parents’ death at the hands of arms smuggler Aristotle Kristatos.

Melina: It was my parents they killed. Not yours.

The St. Georges, along with the ATAC, a communicator just developed by the British, is lost in the Ionic Sea. With both the British and the Russians looking for it, Sir Timothy Havelock, a sometime secret servant of her Majesty is charged with finding it. However, a Cuban hit man named Gonzalez takes his life and the life of his wife, with their daughter Melina watching helplessly.

Bond is put on the case, tracks Gonzalez to Madrid, prepares to take out Gonzalez and the man that is paying him, but before he can, Melina gets to him first. Bond finds himself escaping with Melina and putting a new spin on the phrase “a drive through the country.”

After a brief trip to England where Bond finds out that Emile Locque was the man with Gonzalez before he was killed, he follows Locque to the Alps and meets with an Italian Intelligence agent named Ferrera who in turn brings Bond to Aristotle Kristatos. Kristatos says that his rival Colombo is Locque's employer, and offers up an interesting bit of trivia: a white dove is a symbol of Colombo and his group.

Bond: Melina, look at me. You were lucky once, but they are on to you. The telegram, the motorcycles back there, they prove it. Now, please, let me handle this.

But before Bond can fly with the doves, he has to take Bibi Dahl, Kristatos' ward and a world-class figure skater, to the biathlon and save Melina from an attack via motorcycle. Later that night, Bond finds Ferrera dead, a white dove in his hand.

Traveling to meet Kristatos in Greece, Bond comes across the lovely Countess Lisl, who he is told is Colombo's mistress. After a brief tango with Lisl, which ends in her death, goons of Colombo take prisoner Bond aboard Colombo's ship, where a clearer picture develops. It is Kristatos, not Columbo, who is the arms dealer, and who uses the dove as a sign. Colombo offers to prove it during a night raid of one of Kristatos' factories, and Bond makes the snap decision to trust Colombo.

Melina: You? How are you involved?
Bond: All I can tell you is that its something of vital interest to both our countries.
Melina: More important than my parents?
Bond: Your father was a part of it. He thought it important enough to risk his life.

That night Bond finds Locque, and kills him by throwing Locque's teetering car off the edge of the cliff, with a kick, and a toss of the pin Ferrara was holding when he died. Returning to Greece, Bond and Melina find the ATAC, and in turn Kristatos' men find them. Bond and Melina are taken prisoner, tied together, and sent over a coral reef. However, they get free, and return to her family’s ship the Triana, where with a clue from Max the Parrot leads them to realize Kristatos' next move.

At St. Cyril's, an old hide out of both Colombo and Kristatos' during the war for Greek Independence, Kristatos is making final plans to sell the ATAC - in Cuba. After a bit of hand to hand combat, Bond brings new meaning to Détente, when he tosses the ATAC over the cliff so neither the English, nor the newly arrived General Gogol can get their hands on it.

Quotes

Bond: The Chinese have a saying. “Before starting out on revenge, you first dig two graves.
Melina: I don’t expect you to understand. You’re English. But I’m half Greek, and Greek women, like Elektra, always avenge their loved ones. I must go.
